Cut work sarees and Indian fashion

Cut work is a form of embroidery that is more of needle work. It is done with the help of a needle and making designs of the drawn pattern along with giving spacing or creating cuts in between. Earlier it used to be done with hand only, now it is possible with the help of machine too. It is also referred to as Richelieu embroidery.


Applique and cutwork are almost similar to each other. The difference in both the needle work is that the cloth is cut out instead of the cloth being added. A certain kind of soluble is used to help in trimming the cloth once the required design of embroidery has been made over it. After the trimming happens it is given a neat finish by stitching the corners that have been trimmed.


There are two kinds of cutworks that are done. One is the traditional cutwork and other is the cutwork corner designs. The cutwork corner designs are the designs that are nowadays done on the sarees. The cloth that is used for the cutwork is generally georgette, satin or cotton. The cutwork requires a sturdy cloth. The cloth has to be strong enough to hold the strains of the embroidery, as the cloth has to go through needle work as well as the process of trimming. If the cloth is not strong enough it can get torn during the process.


The cutwork on the sarees is done on the edges of the sarees. It helps in giving the saree a distinct look. The cutwork basically comes on the border of the saree and the palla of the saree. The rest of the saree generally has very less or no embroidery. Though the cutwork sarees can be made in any colour but, it is generally designed in dark hues, to make the work appear more elegant.
